National Apprenticeship Week Spotlight
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud to shine a light on the talented apprentices shaping the future of our team.Last September, we introduced our first cohort of DevOps apprentices to our TeckAcademy - some of them are already contributing to customer projects, while others are building impactful internal solutions.
We’re incredibly impressed with their growth, curiosity, and commitment.
We asked some of our apprentices how they are getting on!
How has your experience as a DevOps apprentice been so far?
John - It’s been an amazing experience overall and I’ve enjoyed it so much, but challenging at the same time. I’ve been put onto real projects quite quickly, so instead of just doing training exercises, I’ve been working on actual infrastructure, APIs, and automation tasks with the team. Some days you feel a bit out of your depth, especially when everything is new, but that’s also where you learn the most. I’ve picked up loads of practical skills in a short space of time, especially around AWS, Terraform and Git.
Ezana - I’ve been really enjoying my experience as a DevOps apprentice so far. I’m learning loads every day, and one of the best parts is being able to apply that knowledge in a practical setting. Being hands-on with real projects really helps cement what I’m learning and builds my confidence at the same time.
What does a typical day look like for you right now?
John - Most days start with a stand-up where the team talks about what they’re working on and any blockers. After that, I’ll usually be working on a ticket - could be anything from setting up infrastructure with Terraform, debugging something in AWS, or helping with backend or frontend changes on the project. I’ll then go get lunch with the team or others in the office - everyone’s sound, so it’s always a good laugh. I also spend a bit of time each day reading documentation or asking teammates questions when I get stuck. It’s very hands-on and changes depending on the sprint.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in tech?
Ezana - Get stuck in! Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the industry, your projects, or anything you don’t understand. Absorb as much knowledge as possible and take every opportunity to learn. The more curious and proactive you are, the more you’ll get out of the experience.
We’re also excited to be welcoming our second cohort of apprentices at the end of February - a huge milestone for us as we continue to invest in early careers and future talent.
